Jan 30, 2014 (newstodate): 2013 was another record year for cargo volumes at Poland's Warsaw Chopin Airport.
The growth over the preceding year was 6.3 percent, to a total of 48,200 tonnes, including 47,500 tonnes of international cargo, up 6.4 percent, y-o-y, and 626 tonnes of domestic cargo that was down by 3.9 percent.
Imports exceeded exports, with 27,300 tonnes and 20,200 tonnes respectively.
The airport also handled 16,000 tonnes of mail.
The prime cargo destinations in terms of volume carried included Cologne with 8,400 tonnes, Leipzig 5,100, Chicago 4,000, Dubai 3,900, and New York 3,100 tonnes.
The biggest cargo carriers were LOT Polish Airlines with 16,900 tonnes, UPS Airlines with 9,800 tonnes, European Air Transport with 5,100 tonnes, Emirates with 3,900 tonnes and Sprint Air with 2,100 tonnes.
In the short-term plans is the further extension of the cargo infrastructure.
A new apron for cargo aircraft is near completion, and the construction of a third cargo terminal is due to start soon.
The airport is also completing a study on which way to go about the planned new cargo terminal whether Polish Airports, as the operator of Chopin Airport, should build the terminal and transfer it to be operated by a specialised third-party company, or rather to lease land to a third-party company for the construction of the facility.
A market research is also soon to produce a draft list of companies interested in working with the airport.
-We would like to attract businesses which have not worked with Chopin Airport before, for example integrators such as World Air Cargo or Schenker, says Michal Marzec, Warsaw Chopin Airport director.
