Sep 23, 2013 (newstodate): The construction of a new airport at Brasov, Romania, is still proceeding, but problems remain.
The issue of financing is a recurring issue for the project as state investments have been cut rendering it necessary for the local government to step with its limited resources.
Plans are now to for construction of the terminal building to put up for a tender comprising implementation and management by foreign investors.
The airport, when completed, will have an estimated through-put of 300,000 passengers during its first year of operation, but this must rise to one mio pax within eight or nine years of operation in order to become profitable.
Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport is designed to have a 2,800 m runway allowing for operations by medium-sized aircraft including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
In the first phase, the construction period will be 24-30 months, and original plans were to start construction by mid-April 2009 already.
