Sep 24, 2013 (newstodate): Hamburg Airport has approved plans for construction of a new air cargo complex to replace the existing terminal built in the 60'ies.
Construction works on a new 60,000 sq m facility will start by early 2014, slated for commissioning in mid-2015.
The new facility will be designed for an annual maximum handling capacity at 150,000 tonnes, equipped with up to 40 truck handling gates and a 20,000 sq m cargo handling area plus space for forwarders and offices.
In 2012, Hamburg Airport saw its flown air cargo up by 2.1 percent, while trucked cargo declined by 8.9 percent.
The total air cargo volumes, excluding transit cargo, was 64,439 tonnes, down 4.7 percent, y-o-y.
As in earlier years, less than one-third of the total volume was flown cargo, the remaining two-thirds being trucked instead to other German cargo hubs, primarily Frankfurt and Bonn/Cologne.
