Sep 24, 2013 (newstodate): The Russian city of Rostov-on-Don will have a new airport to replace the existing airport by 2017.
Behind the project are the airport group Renova, the Rostov Region and Russia's Ministry of Transport that will build the airport under a public-private partnership.
The existing airport is close to city center, hindering its continued development and modernisation to existing standards.
The new airport, Rostov-on-Don South will have a 3,600m runway and a passenger terminal designed for handling of up to eight mio passengers and 70 mio tonnes of air cargo annually.
By comparison, the existing airport with one 2,500m runway has the capacity to handling of only 1.9 mio passengers and 25 mio tonnes of cargo.
Expectations are that the new airport will be handling five mio passengers in 2020, growing to eight mio by 2030.
