Sep 13, 2013 (newstodate): Starting from spring 2014, Latvia's airBaltic plans to launch flights to a new UK destination: Aberdeen, in Scotland.
With the eventual launch date yet pending, the carrier will offer four weekly rotations on the route from Riga.
Expectations are that besides serving the growing leisure traffic market, the route would also generate traffic via Riga to destinations that, like Aberdeen, are strong in energy production, oil drilling and exploration such as Baku, in Azerbaijan, as well as to other destinations in CIS and Eastern Europe.
Like the decision to go all-year on the now-seasonal route from Riga to Larnaca, Cyprus, from this winter's schedule, the plan to open up Aberdeen as a new destination reflects airBaltic's growing confidence of its financial viability as well as the growth in aircraft capacity with the completion of the Bombardier Q400 fleet now totaling 12 aircraft.
