Sep 17, 2013 (newstodate): Maintenance of the world's fleet of various models of the Russian versatile aircraft, the IL-76 is increasingly becoming an issue, says a Lithuanian company.
According to locatory.com, a total of some 400 IL-76 freighters are currently serving with commercial and military operators, of which 50 are serving with Russian carriers and a large number with the Russian military.
94 per cent of these aircraft are over 15 years old and will approach retirement age. There is a severe shortage of aircraft spares and components around, and the Russian after market is still under-developed, making it increasingly difficult to locate spare-parts outside the country, according to locatory.com.
But about one hundred IL-76 aircraft of various models are now stored with operators outside Russia, and if scrapped these would significantly ease the strain on the situation.
