Sep 09, 2013 (newstodate): Representatives from 14 countries representing the countries in the Danube Region are meeting in Belgrade, Serbia, to discuss the development of air traffic services.
At the meeting, the current situation concerning the region's provision of airports was highlighted by a recent study by the Transport Observatory for South Eastern Europe.
In the Balkan region are today 17 airports of which only two, Belgrade and Zagreb stand out as regional hubs.
Overall, the airport at Ljubljana, Rijeka, Pula, Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Osijek, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Tivat, Podgorica, Tirana, Skopje, Ohrid, Pristina, Belgrade and Nis are only scantily interconnected, have limited volumes of operations, and almost all are poorly connected to other traffic infrastructures in their couontries.
EU is assisting the region in developing its airports infrastructure and has already identified 150 projects in 14 Balkan countries to be supported by EU regional funds.
