Sep 25, 2013 (newstodate): The Croatian government is in the final phase of launching a tender for privatization of Osijek Airport, near Vukovar.
After the final assessment of the airport's assets, the tender is expected to be opened within only a few weeks.
Osijek Airport has seen its traffic volumes declining and is now only served by Croatia Airlines after Ryanair closed down its operation at Osijek in 2010 after a short-lived success with its route to Frankfurt Hahn from May 6, 2009.
The airport has therefore struggled to find a role as a cargo airport, with some success in transfer of fresh fish from Tanzania destined for the European market as well as departure point for various relief organizations.
Among parties that have shown an initial interest in the airport is the Indonesian Global Putra International Group that has aired potentials for taking over the airport in order to set up Osijek as a cargo hub.
The airport comprises a cargo terminal with a 1,720 sq.m. warehouse divided into a customs warehouse, a perishables storage warehouse, and a warehouse sector of 567 sq.m. facilitating packing, palletizing and build/break of containers.
In 2012 the airport, equipped with a 2,500 m runway, handled 22,000 passengers and 180 tonnes of cargo.
