Aug 30, 2013 (newstodate): Rounding off its strategy for expansion in the German airport handling market in 2012, Havas Europe is in a consolidation phase.
-We are now operating at Germany's six most important airports Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Stuttgart, and Germany is indeed one of the most mature, expanding and attractive markets in Europe, says Janis Balkens, Havas Europe CEO.
-More than 40 airlines are offering long-haul intercontinental services from these airports, leaving a huge potential for continued expansion in terms of airline contracts at these airports.
-We are therefore not necessarily driven to launch business in new markets to increase our business volumes and customer portfolio. It is not currently our prime aim to go outside our current geographical areas, but we are of course always monitoring market developments and trends to be at the right spot at the right time.
-Germany is still a very regulated market as to airport handling, certainly much more so than e.g. the Nordic region. We thus expect even the German market to be gradually liberalized which will in itself offer new business opportunities at our existing bases. So there is really much more to go for within our current strategy for Germany, and in a European context we are still a small player, says Mr Balkens.
Starting out in the German market with the opening at Frankfurt Airport on April 17, 2012, the company's German strategy was completed only four months later with the launch of services at Stuttgart Airport.
In April 2010, the Turkish ground handling company Havas bought 50 percent of the shares in North Hub Services that was established in 2009 by Baltijas Aviacijas Sistemas, with Riga Airport, in Latvia, as its first operation.
