Aug 07, 2013 (newstodate): Kazakhstan has decided to set up an Airport Management Department to enhance and unify the management and services of 11 airports in the country.
Based on recommendations by Lufthansa Consulting, the new department will consolidate management of the airports, form a development strategy and bring the airports in line with international standards.
According to the chairman of the Civil Aviation Commission of Kazakhstan Ministry of Transport and Communications Beken Seidakhmetov, 11 of the country's 188 airports are in operating unprofitably, but due to regulations they are unable to raise profits through improving services and offerings.
With the new Airport Management Department that corresponds to a holding company, the road ahead may also be cleared for an eventual privatization at a later stage.
