Aug 02, 2013 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo's new strategy sees its market share in tonnage dipping through 2013.
In June 2013, Finnair Cargo was down to 40 percent in market share, with 1,277 tonnes of cargo and down 27.5 percent, y-o-y.
In June 2012 the carrier's market share was still 51.4 percent, and in earlier years the market share would top the 60-percent mark.
The decline in market share follows on the company's strategic decision to focus on yields and revenues, rather than tonnage, obviously.
The decrease in tonnage by Finnair Cargo is counter-balanced by a corresponding increase in the volumes picked up by other carriers.
In June 2013, only three out of the Top-10 IATA carriers noted a negative growth in volumes - besides Finnair Cargo also Singapore Airlines Cargo with a drop by 8.6 percent, y-o-y, to 111 tonnes, and SAS Cargo that was down 34.6 percent to a mere 94 tonnes.
Lufthansa Cargo was thus ranked #2 with 417 tonnes, up 12.9 percent, y-o-y, followed by KLM Cargo up 85.5 percent to 315 tonnes, Cargolux with 191 tonnes and up 36.4 percent, and Turkish Airlines with 146 tonnes and up 67.4 percent.
Lufthansa Cargo thus held 13.3 percent and KLM Cargo 10.1 percent of the Finnish IATA export cargo market in June 2013.
