Aug 13, 2013 (newstodate): According to Eurostat statistics on 2012, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing airfreight market in the Nordic and Baltic region.
In Latvia, export and import volumes counted together accrued to 31,460 tonnes - an increase by 171.9 percent, y-o-y, driven by the intense and voluminous air traffic serving the ISAF forces through Riga Airport starting from March 2012.
Volumes in Lithuania also increased significantly by 43.3 percent, y-o-y, to 31,460 tonnes of import and export cargo, while volumes in Estonia grew by 29.5 percent, y-o-y, to 23,760 tonnes.
Volume-wise, Denmark took the lead in the Nordic region with import/export volumes rising 6.8 percent, y-o-y, to 166,283 tonnes, which thus does not include the significant volumes of transfer cargo, 243,583 tonnes, at the region's largest air traffic hub, Copenhagen Airport.
Finland's export/import airfreight increased by 9.2 percent, y-o-y, to 195,631 tonnes, and Sweden generated 141,365 tonnes of airfreight, which was however down 13.9 percent, y-o-y.
In Norway, import/export volumes were 78,225 tonnes, an increase by 19.5 percent, y-o-y.
