Aug 01, 2013 (newstodate): Set up as a cargo carrier in 2003, Air Armenia is to expand into passenger operations starting from this autumn.
The carrier plans to perform its first passenger flight on August 18, 2013, marking the 10th anniversary of its first cargo operation.
Air Armenia has been assigned to serving routes from Yerevan to Moscow, Sochi, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar and St Petersburg, and the first flight will be on the route between Yerevan and Moscow.
The carrier has signed lease contracts for two Airbus A320 aircraft, the first of which will be delivered by mid-August and the second to follow by late September 2013.
Air Armenia will thus be in place in time for participating in the Armenian tender for commercial flight services opening in mid-September 2013 in an effort to revive national air services after the demise by April 1, 2013, of Armavia.
For cargo operations, the carrier's fleet comprises four AN-12 and one AN-32 freighter aircraft.
