Jul 24, 2013 (newstodate): The planned acquisition by Swissport of Servisair will change the picture in the Nordic scene as well - if carried through, pending approval by various state authorities.
Since December 1, 2011, Swissport is operating at Finland's Helsinki Vantaa Airport with Finnair as its launch customer.
Swissport is also present in the Danish market since July 1, 2012, when the company established its first cargo station in the Nordic market.
On March 7, 2013, Swissport also signed a LoI with the SAS Group concerning the take-over of the handling companies SGH and Spirit Air Cargo Handling, aiming at an eventual full acquisition expected by the end of 2013.
As a first step, the parties intend to set up a JV company (Swissport holding 51 and SAS 49 percent of the shares) to which the business and operations of SAS ground handling and Spirit cargo handling will be transferred.
Servisair is currently operating at Copenhagen Airport in the form of an airline lounge after pulling out from the Danish market from January 1, 2007, transferring all Ground Handling Services in Copenhagen, with the exception of the Penauille Servisair Executive Lounge offering, to its then-Network Partner, Nordic Aero, but as this company also exited the Danish market after a brief period of time, this connection broke as well.
Servisair is also present in the Finnish market offering a full range of handling services for carriers including Norwegian and adding Japan Airlines as its latest new customer from July 1, 2013, when the carrier launched services on the route between Tokyo and Helsinki.
Neither Swissport nor Servisair is thus present in the Swedish and Norwegian markets.
If the Swissport acquisition of the SAS Group handling companies goes through alongside the take-over of Servisair, the conglomerate of handling companies would obtain a comprehensive grip on the Nordic handling market, with Aviator as the only major competitor.
The Aviator Group was founded in December 2010, when Aviator purchased the Swedish company, Nordic Aero, and the two Norwegian companies, Rros Flyservice and Norport Ground Handling. An Additional acquisition was made April 2011, when Aviator made an agreement with the Danish company Novia to purchase all shares of Novia and Sturup Handling.
Aviator currently provides ground handling services at 22 airports in Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
Starting from September 1, 2013, Aviator will add cargo handling to its service portfolio, opening up at Oslo Airport with DHL as its first customer.
In the cargo terminal handling business, WFS is present in the Danish market since May 1, 2006, as well as DHL Aviation at Copenhagen Airport.
