Jul 30, 2013 (newstodate): Serbia can look forward to a new era of positive growth for its national carrier JAT, saved by Etihad's acquisition of 49 percent of the stake.
But the country will still have to wait another round before hopes for FAA to lift its Category II status materialize.
According to the latest revision of FAA Flight Standards Service, published on July 12, 2013, Serbia remains rated as sub-standard in aviation safety, placing it in Category II together with Ukraine and Montenegro as the only countries in Europe.
Serbia was downgraded from Category 1 in 2002 barring any service by a Serbia-registered aircraft carrier into North American airports, and the country has since made several unsuccessful attempts to regain its position that will allow JAT to launch own flights on routes to the USA.
Ukraine was downgraded from Category I to Category II by FAA in 2005, and Montenegro shared Serbia's downgrading from 2002 and has not since been re-evaluated by FAA.
Croatia was also downgraded in January 2008, but was lifted off Category 2 again in 2012 regaining its Category I status.
