Jul 25, 2013 (newstodate): Unusual weather conditions have had a strong impact on the regularity of scheduled flights at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport.
Starting from the last days of June, sustained southwesterly winds resulted in weeks with dense fog at the airport which caused delays, cancellations and diversions of many flights by the islands' carrier Atlantic Airways.
-It has indeed been an unusual situation and caused many problems for us. But on the other hand we have benefited much from the implementation of the airnav system RNP-AR developed by the Airbus subsidiary Quovadis, from the first day of service of our Airbus A319 aircraft, says Magni Arge, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-Without this system traffic we would have much more hampered by the unfavorable weather conditions, and we cannot deny that the specific topographical and climatic conditions given by our place in the world are demanding compared to today's traveling public's expectations for seamless services.
-Happily, the latest modernizations at Vagar Airport, including the ILS system and not least the runway extension, have greatly improved the situation and enabled us to operate the Airbus A319 with full payload and on flights utilizing the full technical range of operation, says Mr Arge.
Atlantic Airways received its first Airbus A319 in March 2012, adding a second aircraft in June 2013, and will take in a third Airbus A319 by October this year.
