Jul 29, 2013 (newstodate): IATA's CASS statistics are indicative on trends - but do not lean too heavily on them!
According to CASS, the Norwegian IATA export air cargo market was up eight percent to 9,246 tonnes in June 2013.
-There are several problems in basing your market evaluation on the CASS statistics, says Christoph Harneid, Lufthansa Cargo Country Manager Norway.
-For one, a carrier like Asiana, operating three weekly freighter from Oslo Gardermoen, is not a member of CASS and therefore outside the statistics as are a number of smaller airlines that also lift some Norwegian seafood via European airports.
-Second, many airlines truck seafood exports out of Norway for uplift from European hubs, and several leading fish forwarders also truck 30-40 percent of their seafood volumes out of hubs including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Liege and London. Trucked volumes of airfreight are not, however, recorded in the CASS statistics.
-Norway exports some 100,000 tonnes of seafood annually by air, which is clearly much more than recorded by CASS Norway, says Mr Harneid.
Avinor's official cargo statistics also do not record trucked volumes of airfreight.
