May 18, 2013 (newstodate): Long rumored, Etihad has now officially confirmed its intentions of acquiring a minority stake in the Serb carrier JAT.
While no explicit details were presented on this at yesterday's joint Etihad/JAT press conference in Belgrade, Serbia, it is now expected that Etihad will take over 49 percent of the Serb partner by July 15, 2013, and final talks are now being conducted between Etihad and the Serb government.
Already in place is an extensive code-share agreement covering a wide range of JAT flights in Europe, flights between Belgrade and Abu Dhabi as well as Etihad flights to destinations in Australia, China and many other Asian countries as well as North America.
After JAT's take-over by Etihad, the Serb carrier will be thoroughly restructured, the aircraft fleet will be replenished and the corporate image of the carrier will be changed, sources say.
