Jun 14, 2013 (newstodate): Japan remains an important market for Norway's export of fresh salmon. But export volumes have declined in 2013.
The problem is that there are not enough volumes of Norwegian salmon large enough to meet the requirements in the Japanese markets.
At the same time, airfreight capacity to Japan is below market demand, leading to higher cargo rates and, eventually, a high price on the commodity.
Statistics provide convincing evidence of the problem: in January-May 2012 Norway exported 5,500 tonnes of fresh salmon by air to the Japanese market.
In the same period in 2013, volumes have declined to 2,800 tonnes.
Compared to 2012, the market in 2013 is down some 15 percent due to high market price of the salmon and declining volumes of salmon of the right size for the Japanese and Taiwanese markets.
