Jun 10, 2013 (newstodate): Despite a restructuring of the freighter network and the opening of a new European hub at Brussels, Finnair Cargo has still to see a rebound in cargo volumes.
Volumes in May 2013 were down by 5.2 percent, y-o-y, to 11,626 tonnes of which 2,723 tonnes were carrier on freighters - down 4.8 percent, y-o-y.
Volumes in Finnair passenger aircraft bellies were also down by 5.3 percent, y-o-y, to 8,902 tonnes in May.
Except for Europe that generates only a minor part of the total volumes - 1,981 tonnes and up 10.4 percent, all other markets were down on the previous year, including the crucial Asian market where Finnair Cargo generated 6,200 tonnes, which was however a drop by 8.7 percent, y-o-y.
In the first five months of 2013 the company's volumes thus totaled 55,883 tonnes, a decline by 10.2 percent.
The capacity, measured in ATK, increased by 0.3 percent in May 2013, but sold capacity, measured in RTK, dropped by 6.8 percent, resulting in a drop in the over-all load factor by 4.8 percentage-points.
Starting from June 6, 2013, Finnair introduced an Airbus A340-300 aircraft on Thursday morning flights between Helsinki and Brussels, its new European cargo hub.
Finnair Cargo is already operating MD-11F rotations on the freighter route between Brussels and Helsinki on Saturdays and Sundays.
In addition to these operations, Finnair operates up to four daily narrow-body flights between Helsinki and Brussels as well as scheduled road feeder services between the two hubs.
