Jun 19, 2013 (newstodate): The Armenian government is seeking ways of reviving a national carrier after the demise of Armavia earlier this year.
Plans may be to designate two Armenian carriers to fulfill the role as national carriers after a thorough restructuring to meet new stringent requirements, sources say.
Airlines potentially qualifying for the process are Air Armenia and Armenian International Airways.
Air Armenia is a carrier operating a fleet of eight Russian-built ageing aircraft while Armenian International Airways was a private carrier merged with Armavia in 2005.
The vision of setting up one or more new national carriers is driven by a significant hike in passenger fares since the grounding of Armavia as international carrier dig into the Armenian market.
