May 13, 2013 (newstodate): Sweden's Orebro Airport has applied for approval of plans for extending its runway system.
If granted, the airport will extend its currently 2,600m runway to 3,300m plus the addition of a 300m exit zone at each end of the runway.
Today, May 13, is the final day for handing in environmental objections or comments on the plan, after which the final political evaluation leading to an approval of the project will take place.
While the airport would like to see the runway extension carried through, the are no plans to lift the current limits on the volume of flight operations that allow for 30,000 annual movements including 7,000 flight operations by jet aircraft over 50 tonnes of MTOW.
The existing runway was established in 2001-2002, extended from the previous 2,300m.
-Hopes are that the project will be launched later in 2013, and the new runway system would then become operative by 2015, says Hakan Nilsson, Orebro Airport.
-With an extended runway, airlines would be able to operate non-stop flights with larger aircraft into Orebro Airport, greatly boosting our competitiveness, says Mr Nilsson.
