May 10, 2013 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport has embarked on a comprehensive project running till August 31, 2014, for renovation of the runway infrastructure.
The project, supported by EU funds, will comprise renovation of the runway surface, improvement of the airstrip and the security area at the end of the runway, construction of two new taxiways, upgrade of the runway lighting system, reconstruction of the rainwater and airfield drainage system, reconstruction of aprons 2 and 3, two new de-icing areas, a vehicle washing hangar, a waste collection area, and installation of a CAT II lighting system on the taxiways.
The works follow on a tender closed on November, 1, 2012, and won by a partnership of FCC, Hochtief and ACB.
During the construction work, the runway of Riga International Airport will be closed for flights between midnight and 6 a.m.
