May 27, 2013 (newstodate): Construction works on a new international airport in Mongolia are due to start from June 2013.
Expected to be commissioned in December 2016, the new airport will replace the country's only current international airport, Chinggis Khaan International Airport where operations are limited by a most demanding topographic and climatic environment.
Following a tender process, two Japanese companies Mitsubishi Corporation and Chiyoda Corporation have been selected to build the new airport some 30 miles away from the country's capital, Ulaanbaatar, or Ulan Bator.
The new airport will have a 3,600 m concrete runway, a 33,000 sq m passenger terminal and will be designed to the handling of up to 10 mio passengers when fully developed in its final state.
When the new airport enters operation, the existing Chinggis Khaan International Airport will be decommissioned in 2017.
