May 31,2013 (newstodate): Serbia's Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is close to completion of a new infrastructure project.
Within the coming one or two months, the airport will commission a new aircraft platform offering four new aircraft parking stands dedicated to freighter and regional aircraft.
Fully equipped with lighting systems and other pertinent infrastructure, the new 26,000 sq m apron will not be dedicated to specific operations but allow the airport to handle ad-hoc and non-scheduled aircraft operations, notably freighter flights.
In this year's Q1, a total of 1,515 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport, down eight percent, y-o-y, while mail volumes remained unchanged against last year at 249 tonnes.
The new cooperation between JAT and Etihad Airways is expected to boost the Serb airfreight market as well as transit cargo business, and expectations are that Etihad will also finance the long-overdue construction of a new air cargo terminal at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.
