Mar 08, 2013 (newstodate): With the LoI under which Swissport will gradually take over the SAS Group's handling companies SGH and Spirit Air Cargo Handling, the over-all picture of cargo handling at Scandinavia's airports will change significantly.
Spirit Air Cargo Handling is present at a total of 12 airports throughout Scandinavia including air cargo handling at the terminals in Copenhagen and Billund, Denmark, Malmo, Gothenburg and Stockholm in Sweden, and Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Kristiansand, Trondheim, Bodo and Tromso in Norway.
Since July 1, 2012, Swissport has been active at Copenhagen Airport - its only existing Scandinavian stronghold - operating the former Novia cargo terminal in competition to Spirit at the airport as well as WFS, operating at Copenhagen since May 2, 2006.
At all other airports in Scandinavia, Swissport will be a newcomer to compete with Cargo Center at the airports of Stockholm and Malmo in Sweden, as well as Menzies also at Malmo, while it will retain Spirit's monopoly at Norway's Oslo Gardermoen Airport.
According to the release issued on Thursday, Swissport will take over both management and operations of the joint-venture with Spirit prior to the eventual full acquisition expected by the end of 2013.
