Mar 07, 2013 (newstodate): Swissport and Scandinavian Airline Systems today announced they have signed a Letter of Intent creating the basis for continued negotiations between the two companies aiming at an agreement to transfer full ownership of SAS' ground handling in Denmark, Sweden and Norway to Swissport.
As a first step, the parties intend to set up a JV company ( Swissport holding 51 and SAS 49 percent of the shares) to which the business and operations of SAS ground handling and Spirit cargo handling will be transferred.
The Letter of Intent is paving the way for continued negotiations between SAS and Swissport International concerning the complete outsourcing of SAS ground and cargo handling services including the workforce of approximately 5000 full time employees in Scandinavia.
Swissport will undertake the management and operational responsibility for the company that will provide ground and cargo handling for SAS and other airline customers in Scandinavia.
Swissport is already present in Copenhagen Airport since July 1, 2012, when its started cargo handling by taking over the former Novia Cargo Terminal on the airport's eastern premises, left vacant after Spirit Air Cargo Handling's move to facilities immediately adjoining the passenger aircraft apron from March 13, 2012.
In a Nordic context, established itself at Finland's Helsinki Vantaa Airport from December 1, 2011, with Finnair as its launch customer and providing baggage and apron services under a five-year contract.
