Mar 04, 2013 (newstodate): Poland's Chopin Airport recorded its best year ever in 2012, with over 45,000 tonnes of cargo handled - up 3.9 percent, y-o-y.
In 2012, the airport handled a total of 45,400 tonnes of cargo, including 44,700 tonnes of international and 700 tonnes of domestic air cargo.
Over-all, imports at 26,800 tonnes exceeded export cargo that accounted for 18,600 tonnes.
The airport also handled 17,100 tonnes of mail during the year.
Among the most important cargo destinations were Leipzig, 7,000 tonnes and up 32.1 percent, Cologne with 6,500 tonnes and up 38.3 percent, Chicago with 3,300 tonnes and up 32 percent, New York with 3,000 tonnes and up 42.9 percent, and finally Shanghai that generated 2,600 tonnes, replacing Chengdu with 2,100 tonnes on the top-5 list in 2012 .
The biggest cargo carriers were LOT Polish Airlines with 15,200 tonnes and up 5.6 percent, UPS Airlines with 10,600 tonnes and down 4.5 percent, European Air Transport with 7,000 tonnes and up 34.6 percent, Sprint Air with 2,000 tonnes and up 11 percent, and Air Contractors lifting 1,900 tonnes and up 21.4 percent.
