Mar 15, 2013 (newstodate): The Icelandic ACMI and cargo charter company Bluebird Cargo is cautious about prospects for 2013.
-We would like to see a return to better times and we at least hope that this year may see a stabilization after a very difficult period reflecting the general decline in world economy, says Skuli Skulasson, Bluebird Cargo managing director.
-We are operating a fleet of five Boeing 737 freighters, one owned and four on lease contracts.
-Half of our capacity is engaged on projects and ocntracts while the other half stands idle on the ground. This is certainly not a satisfactory situation, but it probably reflects the general situation in the market.
-The low level of consumer demands in the market has driven needs for air transportation of products down. Also much of the cargo air transportation is now provided in the belly of passenger aircraft on the major lanes. So the freighter business is very difficult and highly competitive, with rates dropping low in detriment to costs, says Mr Skulasson.
Since February 2011, Bluebird Cargo original owner, the Icelandair Group has divested itself from the ownership that has been placed with two major Icelandic banks pending a future sale.
It is known that several parties have been in negotiations with the two banks behind Bluebird Cargo - but so far producing no results.
