Mar 08, 2013 (newstodate): In February 2013 Finnair carried a total of 9,703 tonnes of cargo.
That was a drop by 22.7 percent, compared to same month in 2012.
Cargo on passenger flights was down by 10.3 percent, y-o-y, to 7,850 tonnes, while cargo on freighter operations dropped 53.3 percent to 1,772 tonnes.
Only cargo on the North American flights were up in volume by 1.2 percent to 537 tonnes while all other areas were down, including the crucial Asian traffic where loads were down 13.3 percent to 5,543 tonnes.
Load factors also declined, with North Atlantic traffic down 5.5 percentage-points, and Asian traffic load factor down 4.7 percentage-points to 73.5.
For the first two months of 2013 the carrier thus generated a total of 19,822 tonnes, down 19.4 percent, y-o-y, including 16,441 tonnes on scheduled passenger flights, down 3.4 percent, and 3,229 tonnes on freighter flights, down 57.2 percent, y-o-y.
-This year's Chinese New Year impacted on our February figures, with reduced capacity and demand. Last year's Chinese New Year was in January, says Juha Jarbinen, Finnar Cargo Managing Director, in a comment to the February statistics.
-Overall, the cargo market remained challenging in many route areas, but we have healthier financial performance than last year thanks to more controlled freighter capacity and increased focus on revenue management and RFS network optimization, says Mr Jarvinen.
Starting from April 2013, Finnair Cargo will open Brussels Zaventem Airport as its new freighter hub in Continental Europe to complement the service via Finnair's home hub at Helsinki Airport, and at the same time the carrier will restructure its freighter services, with details soon to be released.
