Feb 26, 2013 (newstodate): Serbia now optimistically expects to be upgraded to Category I in the next FAA Flight Standards Service, out within the coming two months.
Serbia was downgraded from Category 1 in 2002 barring any service by a Serbia-registered aircraft carrier into North American airports, and the country has since made several unsuccessful attempts to regain its position that will allow JAT to launch flights on routes to the USA.
If upgraded to Category I, Serbia's JAT will probably launch flights to the USA in 2014, and in the meanwhile the country is seeking cooperation with another carrier to include a call at Belgrade Airport to provide the country with a US flight connection.
In the pipeline is an agreement with Azerbaijan Airlines, to take effect from later this year.
In the Balkan region, Slovenia and Bosnia are rated Category I, while Montenegro is rated Category II like Serbia, and FAA has not so far assessed Bosnia and Macedonia.
