Feb 07, 2013(newstodate): The issue of charges levied on flights through
Russian airspace on transpolar flights by the Russian authorities remains unsolved.
-Unfortunately, the situation has not changed. Russia still refuses to respect its commitments from the agreement they signed in November/December 2012 on phasing-out these royalties, says Klaus Winkler, EU Commission Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, Directorate Aviation and International Transport Affairs .
-The EU side has raised this problem at all levels, including at various EU-Russia Summits at the highest political levels.
According to the agreement, the charges should be fully abolished from 2014, but Russia has still not signed the agreement, and western airlines are forced to pay up to 420 mio USD for rights to fly through Siberian airspace.
