Feb 12, 2013 (newstodate): Hopes never fade in Serbia for a revival of the country's Category I certification by the US FAA International Aviation Safety Assessment Program.
A return to the coveted position will allow carriers, registered in Serbia, to launch flights on new routes into the USA.
Serbia was downgraded from Category 1 in 2002, barring any service by a Serbia-registered aircraft carrier into North American airports, and the country has since made several unsuccessful attempts to regain its position that will allow JAT to launch flights on routes to the USA.
Earlier reviews by FAA in 2004 and 2006 resulted in continued Category II ratings.
Up till the 80'ies, JAT operated flights from the former Yugoslavia to destination in the USA including New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Los Angeles.
A delegation from FAA is now once again in Serbia to assess the progress made by the Serb aviation authorities and JAT, and hopes are running high in Serbia for a positive outcome in the form of an upgrading of the country's status later in 2013.
In the Balkan region, Slovenia and Bosnia have been rated Category I, while Montenegro is also rated Category II like Serbia, and FAA has not so far assessed Bosnia and Macedonia.
