Feb 20, 2013 (newstodate): April 2, 2013, was slated as the launch date for services by Ukraine International Airlines on the route between Kiev and Copenhagen. That is not, however, going to be.
Copenhagen Airport confirms that the carrier has informed of its decision to delete the route from its coming summer schedule, leaving the route without service.
Since October 31, 2010, the route was served by another Ukrainian carrier, Aerosvit.
Aerosvit first operated the route under a code-share agreement with now-defunct Cimber Sterling operating the flights, and from April 1, 2012 with own services using Embraer 190 aircraft.
Aerosvit is however in dire straits, one of its aircraft was arrested at Copenhagen Airport in January 2013, and its European routes are being transferred to UIA with which it shares ownership by Igor Kolomoyski's investment fund.
SAS first entered the Ukrainean market in 1992, but suspended flights from Copenhagen in 1995, returning again from summer 2008 only to leave the route again from March 25, 2011, due to strong competition by the Ukrainian carrier.
It now remains to be seen if SAS will reinstate services between the two markets.
In 2012, passenger volumes on flights between Copenhagen and Kiev reached almost 55,000 according to industry sources.
