Feb 20, 2013 (newstodate): Iraqi Kurdistan's Erbil Airport continued its sky-rocketing growth in cargo volumes through 2012.
A total of 27,849 tonnes of cargo was handled at Erbil - an increase by no less than 54 percent, y-o-y, and primarily consisting of import cargo.
The growth in 2012 is even more impressive as its follows on 2011 where the airport also noted an increase in volumes by 67 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 17,769 tonnes.
With an average of 17 cargo flights a week, bringing in 550 tonnes of cargo, the airport's performance reflects the booming economy in Kurdistan and Northern Iraq, where the demand for cargo imports is ever-growing.
In December 2012, the ban on flights by US registered aircraft into Kurdistan's airports was lifted, which bodes well for the continued growth in volumes through 2013.
