Feb 22, 2013 (newstodate): After elections in Greenland on March 1, 2013, a new government will consider the application from Greenland Express to start flight operations.
A decision was expected by the Greenland Express project group already on January 24, later postponed till January 31, 2013 - but the process will thus now be delayed for a few more months, at best causing the new low-cost carrier to miss most of the summer peak season if the permits are are granted.
The Danish Trafikstyrelsen holds the authority to issue the technical/operational permit but will seek the opinion of Greenland's government as to whether it wants the flights by the applicant to be performed.
In minor issues, Greenland's government has delegated this authority to the country's administration, but in this case concerning the launch of a new carrier intending to provide several weekly scheduled flights throughout the year the case remained with the Government - that, however, stepped down due to the fresh election.
Greenland Express plans to offer flights from Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark and Keflavik at Iceland to Narsarsuak and Kangerlussuaq in Greenland, using an A320 Family aircraft on a six-month leasing contract with a Dutch provider.
Intentions are to apply for an own AOC once the operation has been launched - pending the approval of permits by Greenland's government.
