Feb 25, 2013 (newstodate): In 2012, Estonia's Tallinn Airport passed the two-mio passengers mark for the first time in history.
The record will, however, most likely remain an isolated achievement for some time at least as the country's ailing carrier Estonian Air is struggling for survival.
In 2012, the national carrier contributed 887,083 passengers out of the total of 2,206,692 passengers through the airport, corresponding to 40 percent of the market.
Since then, the carrier has reined in on its route network and with the uncertainties now shrouding the future of Estonian Air, the airport has adjusted its expectations for 2013 to around 1.8 mio passengers.
Still, Estonian Air did increase its passenger volumes in January 2013 to 43,627 against 42,657 passengers last year.
Also the airport's plans for construction of a new terminal to handling of low-cost traffic have been shelved till the return of better times.
