Feb 13, 2013 (newstodate): The future of debt-ridden Estonian Air is in the balance, with options vacillating between a bankruptcy and a strategic cooperation with another carrier as the most probable.
According to Estonian media reports, indications are that Estonian Air may survive in a joint venture with the British carrier Flybe.
Talks between the two parties have been confirmed by both sides, which does not preclude, however, that Estonian Air or rather its owner, the Estonian state, might conduct similar talks with other parties as well.
Should Estonian Air be merged into a JV with Flybe, the Estonian carrier would be well positioned to cooperate closely with Flybe Nordic, a JV with Finnair since October 2011.
Maybe some further light will be cast on the issue when the Estonian government meet tomorrow, February 14, to decide on which next steps to take to secure sustained provision of air services for Estonia.
