Feb 04, 2013 (newstodate): Unexpected elections to Greenland's parliament due on March 12, 2013, have delayed a political decision on whether or not to allow a new Greenlandic low-cost carrier access to operate in the market.
Behind the project named Greenland Express is an international group of investors from the UK, Holland and Dubai, and with preparations already well advanced the project will move ahead once traffic rights have been granted by Greenland's government that is currently handling the application by Greenland Express.
Greenland Express has now, however, been informed that the issue has been shelved until a new government has been formed.
This explanation has now satisfied Air Greenland.
-We consider this as further proof that Greenland's government does not want to allow competition to its own carrier, Air Greenland that has been enjoying a monopoly, says Gert Brask, heading the project and future Greenland Express CEO.
Greenland Express was first told that a decision might be made on January 24, later postponed till January 31, 2013 - and now again delayed for an indefinite period of time.
Existing plans include flights from Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark and Keflavik at Iceland to Narsarsuak and Kangerlussuaq in Greenland, using an A320 Family aircraft on a six-month leasing contract with a Dutch provider
