Feb 26, 2013 (newstodate): In January 2013, the Latvian carrier airBaltic saw its passenger volumes down by 8.6 percent, to 174,564 passengers.
The production in terms of flight operations was also down by seven percent, resulting in a decline in the passenger load figure by eight percentage-points, to a low 59 percent, only slightly above 2011 levels.
Still, the carrier has reportedly increased its revenues "very strongly" in January 2013, supporting its plans for the opening of six new seasonal routes in this summer schedule.
In 2012, airBaltic announced its business plan airBaltic ReShape to return the airline to profitability and sustainable future development at Riga, aiming to return the carrier to profitability in 2014.
In November 2012, the EU Commission opened an in-depth investigation to verify whether various public support measures provided by Latvia in favour of the majority State-owned airline airBaltic are in line with EU state aid rules.
At this stage, the Commission has doubts that these measures were carried out on terms that a private player operating under market conditions would have accepted.
These investigations are still pending.
