Feb 13, 2013 (newstodate): The visions of setting up a new Lithuanian national carrier, Air Lituanica may have gained in credibility with the appointment of a Chief Commercial Officer with a solid background in the industry.
Effective from February 1, 2013, Simonas Bartkus has taken up this new assignment after serving with Lithuania's Vilnius International Airport as Commercial Department Director since February 2010.
While Air Lituanica has still to announce its start-up date, fleet plans and route network, the carrier is expected to launch flights from this summer from Vilnius to Amsterdam, Brussels, Kiev, London, Moscow and Palanga.
From 2014 it will add flights to Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, St Petersburg, Stockholm, Tbilisi, while flights to Istanbul may be added from 2015, at least according to media reports citing Vilnius City's talkative mayor, a driving force behind the project.
According to the same media, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Vilnius International Airport are also partners behind Air Lituanica that will fill a void after the bankruptcy of the country's earlier national carrier, Lithuanian Airlines by early 2009.
