Dec 23, 2013 (newstodate): Turkmenistan maintains high aspirations for having Central Asia's largest airport complex ready for operations by 2017.
If everything proceeds according to plans, Ashgabat Airport will have a passenger terminal capable of serving 1,600 passengers per hour, new cargo and VIP-terminals, a 3,800 meters long runway and a fully reconstructed ground infrastructure.
The new airport tentatively named Ashgabat Oguz Khan International Airport has been out in a tender among international bidders, with a consortium by the German company Airport Consulting Partners and ILF Consulting Engineers emerging as winners and to be responsible for management of the construction of the new international airport, as well as for the development of airports of Turkmenabat and Dashuguz.
Polimeks Construction, one of Turkeys biggest contractors, in 2013 won the tender for the construction of the new airport.
