Dec 03, 2013 (newstodate): By mid-November, Lufthansa Cargo launched a new facility, Real-Time Tracking allowing customers to follow their shipments in real-time all along the chain of transportation.
The new facility builds on transfer of data via the GSM system, visualizing the shipment's actual location on a map with a precision within only few meters.
-The new facility which is a world's first has immediately aroused the interest in the airfreight industry, especially targeting customers in the time-sensitive and hi-value segments including oil & gas, aircraft spares, and ships spares, and will most probably also be of interest in the pharmaceutical industry as we add future applications currently under development, including temperature measurements, says Michael Schoop, Lufthansa Cargo country manager Denmark.
-An envelope with a transmitter is added to the shipments, continuously sending info on position except, of course, during the flight when the transmitter is automatically deactivated for flight safety reasons.
-The Real-Time Tracking facility may be ordered at a small fee in connection with all types of cargo, but it will mostly apply to shipments in our emergency, courier and td.flash products, says Mr Schoop.
The first forwarding company to actually order this facility in the Danish market, and among the first worldwide, was Kuehne & Nagel.
