Dec 13, 2013 (newstodate): Serbia is still yearning for seeing the return of direct services to North America - and again seeing fresh hopes arising.
As Serbia remains in Category II by the US FAA's air safety list since 2002, Serb carriers are barred from setting up new routes using aircraft with Serb registration.
With Etihad now a strong minority owner of the rejuvenated Serb carrier Air Serbia, the situation has changed, and according to Etihad's CEO James Hogan, code-shared Transatlantic routes will indeed be set up to connect Serbia with destinations including Chicago and Toronto by 2016, at the latest, and using Etihad's Airbus A330 aircraft.
Serbia would, however, like to see the opening of direct flights to New York already in 2014.
Up till the 80'ies, JAT operated flights from the former Yugoslavia to destinations in the USA including New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Los Angeles.
