Nov 21, 2013 (newstodate): Turkmenistan has embarked on a program to develop the country's regional airports.
As a first move, work has started on construction of a new regional airport to serve Turkmenabat, in the country's mid-eastern region.
The airport will have a 2,000 m runway, and a Ukrainian company is to build a new passenger terminal, tower and ATC control facilities.
The opening of the new airport is slated for February 2016.
Work on other regional airports are in the plan as is also the setup of new regional carriers to provide the regions with air traffic opportunities for passengers and freight.
