Nov 26, 2013 (newstodate): Plans are evolving for a major infrastructural development of Estonia's Tallinn Airport.
The focus is on the runway and taxiway system as well as a number of other pertinent issues.
-Tallinn Airport is already today capable of handling ad-hoc operations by even the largest commercial aircraft, but in fair weather conditions only, says Erik Sakkov, Tallinn Airport board member.
-The runway is Cat I only, so plans are to extend the existing 3,070m runway by another 420m and develop the system to CAT II both ways. This will require also new runway and airfield LED lighting systems, and the addition of new taxiways.
-With the runway extension we will also be able to move the threshold which will have a positive environmental impact on the noise level in the areas affected by aircraft operations.
-The plan also comprises the establishing of a dedicated de-icing platform including drainage systems to collect fluids, and the construction of a much-needed engine test area away from the noise-sensitive part of the airport.
-Tallinn Airport has long hit the ceiling for expansion in the northern direction. With the new plans we will open up for future expansion into the southern direction, allowing for continued development of the airport as needs arise.
-The plans are now up for public discussion, and pending the solution of the financial issues, including applications for EU support, we will hopefully see a decision to launch the projects step by step from 2014, says Mr Sakkov.
