Nov 25, 2013 (newstodate): Russia's aviation regulator, Rosavia has again assigned the Irish LCC Ryanair to start flights to Moscow and St Petersburg from 2014.
The crux is, however, that Ryanair may operate into these Russian destinations from Ireland only, and Ryanair does not estimate the traffic potentials between Dublin and Moscow and St Petersburg large enough to warrant opening the routes.
Ryanair was actually designated by Ireland in November 2012 as the carrier to serve a new route between Dublin and St Petersburg, based on the air services agreement from 1993 between the two states.
But nothing has happened since despite repeated efforts to make a break-through in negotiations.
Already in 2007, Ryanair cast its eyes on Russia and Ukraine as future prospective markets, provided the availability of cheap handling charges at airports in the countries - and permits to operate from other EU airports besides Dublin.
