Nov 15, 2013 (newstodate): 2013 has been a year of construction works at Latvia's Riga Airport, aiming at increasing the capacity of traffic.
Among the projects is work on the runway including drainage and resurfacing, and also two new taxiways are under construction.
The first of these has now been commissioned, and the second new taxiway will be opened in 2014.
With both new taxiways operative, the traffic volume of the runway will increase from currently 37 aircraft operations per hour to 42.
With this increase, the technical handling capacity of the airport will rise to some 12 mio passengers per year, which more than double today's annual passenger volume.
Also the airport's up-time will be enhanced by the upgrading of the runway lighting system to CAT II level.
In 2014, the airport will continue the resurfacing of the runway, while a new de-icing platform is also being planned.
