Nov 19, 2013 (newstodate): Norway's low-cost carrier Norwegian entered the air cargo business from May 1, 2013 - and business is growing.
-We are now flying with cargo in the belly on almost all Norwegian flights, and the volumes are growing steadily, says Trine Nygaard, Norwegian Cargo Sales and Security Manager.
-Initially, our focus has been on cargo sales on the routes to New York and Bangkok, and next to come is the opening of our new route to Fort Lauderdale starting from November 29, 2013.
-Needless to say, intercontinental cargo plays a key role in our cargo strategy, both as to export, import and transfer shipments. Our backbone on the intercontinental flights is the Boeing 787 aircraft that will take 15 tonnes of cargo on a fully-booked passenger flight.
-We will, however, need to develop interline agreements with other carriers to offer transfer options beyond our own destinations. This process is advancing, and we will be able to announce the first results shortly, says Ms Nygaard.
Serving Norwegian in the US market is the cargo GSA Heavyweight Air Express, while Worldwide GSA has been contracted in the Thai market.
Kales Airline Services is Norwegian's cargo GSA in Scandinavia and Spain, Wexco is GSA in the UK, and Aviation Plus in Holland and France.
Cargo sales and representation in Norway and Sweden remains with the carrier's own sales staff.
