Nov 14, 2013 (newstodate): To exploit its aircraft capacity in slack European seasons, the Lithuanian carrier Small Planet Airlines is looking around for wet-lease business cases across the world.
As a first result of this strategy, the carrier has inked a partnership with Bhutan Airlines as its first project.
With the first flight on October 10, 2013, Small Planet Airlines has been operating a daily flight for Bhutan Airlines between Bangkok and Paro, in Bhutan.
-This summer, we concentrated on holiday flights from European cities to popular tourist resorts in Turkey, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, Egypt, etc. In winter, when there is a big fall in leisure travel in Europe, we are moving some of our planes to Asia where seasonality is inversed, says Vytautas Kaikaris, CEO of Small Planet Airlines.
In the future the company is planning to start flights in other continents where the holiday season begins when winter is closing in on Europe.
During this summer season, the carrier has been operating a fleet of nine aircraft - three in Poland and two in Lithuania, France and Great Britain, respectively.
This fleet will be reduced to seven aircraft during the winter season after delivering two Boeing 737-300 aircraft back to their Ukrainian owner.
In 2014, Small Planet Airlines will take in three Airbus A320 on a leasing contract with CIT Aerospace, with deliveries in March, April and May 2014, respectively.
